Sean O’Casey cover by Leo Manso

Leo Manso designed paperback covers for Pocket Books amongst others in the forties and fifties. This beautiful cover for Sean O’Casey’s Sunset  and Evening Star is a later work from 1961. Strangely, Manso’s obituary in the New York Times fails to mention his work as a book designer.

Thanks for sharing these. A rather amazing collection – and the variety of typefaces a surprise given the pre-computer layout period of these.

Had to laugh at the cowboy cover (with that odd star that looks like it should have five rather than six points). Sadly have to admit I’ve had to do a cover or two like that myself (generally due to design by committee).
