Tourism Guidebooks – Fifties & Sixties

January 18, 2010

Day Tours by Road and Rail, 1957, Great Northern Railway Board

Glendaloch and its Ruins, 1967 (12th edition),

Kerry County Guide and Maps, 1966 (3rd edition), The Irish and Overseas Publishing Co. Ltd.

Above are three examples of tourist guidebooks and brochures from the fifties & sixties. What is interesting about these covers is how little the designs draw on Irish clichés – no shamrocks, leprechauns, shillelaghs, Gaelic script, Aran jumpers, Paul Henry landscapes, pints of stout, harps, rebels or ballad singers. Who the hell were the designers behind these and what were they thinking?
